Artificial intelligence has become one of the most attractive answers to a real cybersecurity problem: too much complexity, too few people, and too much data for human teams to process consistently. In transportation, energy, and operational technology environments, that promise is real. AI can help detect patterns earlier, triage alerts faster, and extract useful signals from volumes of telemetry that would overwhelm traditional workflows.
But that does not make AI trustworthy by default.
The strongest case for AI in cybersecurity is as a force multiplier. It can help smaller teams monitor broader environments. It can surface anomalies across CAN, telematics, SCADA, and enterprise traffic. It can support threat hunting at a scale that would be impossible to achieve manually. Used well, AI can improve speed and focus without replacing expert judgment.
The risk begins when organizations mistake acceleration for maturity.
AI systems introduce their own failure modes. Adversarial inputs can influence outcomes. Telemetry spoofing can blind models. Model drift can degrade performance as operating conditions change. Opaque logic can make it difficult to justify decisions, validate behavior, or explain outcomes to regulators and operators. In safety-sensitive environments, that is not a philosophical concern. It is a governance problem with operational consequences.
That is why AI in cybersecurity should be treated as a governance discipline before it is treated as a tooling decision.
Organizations should start with acceptable use. Not every problem benefits from AI, especially where safety, control actions, or high-consequence operational decisions are involved. They should establish clear policy, define accountability, and ensure that model behavior can be validated and monitored over time. They should treat AI models like other consequential systems, with lifecycle controls for design, testing, monitoring, retraining, and retirement. And they should align deployment with recognizable governance frameworks rather than relying on slogans about innovation.
Human accountability is central. Every AI-supported cybersecurity decision that could affect resilience, compliance, or safety should retain a human-in-the-loop mechanism for verification and override. That is not a sign of distrust. It is a recognition that responsible automation augments judgment rather than replacing it.
This is particularly important in transportation and industrial settings because the environments themselves are variable, noisy, and full of edge cases. Data quality is inconsistent. Operating conditions shift. Interfaces span legacy and modern systems. In that context, the more consequential the environment, the more dangerous it is to deploy inscrutable systems without governance scaffolding around them.
The mature position on AI in cybersecurity is neither alarmist nor naive. AI is useful. It may become indispensable. But its value depends on whether organizations can govern it with the same seriousness they apply to other systems that affect resilience, operations, and trust. In critical environments, governance is not what slows AI down. It is what makes AI usable.
